Clinical Supervision of Forensic Mental Health Assessments
Live online program (virtual)
February 6, 2025, 1:00 - 4:00 PM EST
Due to the high stakes and adversarial contexts in which forensic mental health assessments (FMHAs) occur, clinical supervision of these evaluations often involves unique challenges above and beyond those encountered when supervising traditional clinical work products. This presentation will outline the core competencies that are expected of forensic practitioners who conduct FMHAs and will cover the process of teaching, modeling, and evaluating forensic competencies when supervising trainee assessments in applied forensic settings. The presentation will also outline a process for integrating core issues into FMHA supervision, including cultural considerations and ethical foundations in forensic psychology. Participants can earn up to 3 APA-approved CEUs.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:
Outline the core foundational and functional competencies in forensic psychology described in the forensic literature.
Discuss methods for teaching, mentoring, and modeling culturally informed forensic mental health assessments.
Describe the characteristics of relational mentorship, and discuss the differences between mentorship and supervision in a forensic contact.
Instructors
David Glassmire, Ph.D., is the Director of Psychology Training at Patton State Hospital (PSH), the largest forensic psychiatric hospital in California's state hospital system. He has been the director of Patton's APA-accredited internship since 2006, and he has directed the postdoctoral fellowship in forensic psychology at Patton since 2014. For the past 24 years, he has worked at PSH in a variety of assessment, treatment, and administrative roles, and he also maints a forensic private forensic practice. He regularly conducts and supervises forensic mental health assessments. Along with his trainees, Dr. Glassmire has co-authored 39 research publications and book chapters, most of which focus on improving the accuracy and transparency of psychological test interpretations in forensic assessment across cultural groups and among individuals with diagnoses commonly seen in forensic evaluations. In 2023, he received the Distinguished Contributions to Forensic Psychology award from the American Academy of Forensic Psychology.
Neither the instructors nor the program planning committee have any conflicts of interest or commercial support to disclose.
Continuing Education
Participants can expect to receive up to 3 hours of continuing education credits (CEUs) approved by the American Psychological Association (APA). ILPPP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ILPPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
You must join by and stay for the duration of the presentation in order to receive the CE credits.
CE credits are applicable for licensed psychologists; other disciplines will need to check the relevant statutes and guidance regarding whether or not this can count towards any CE requirement.
Training Fees
$150: Standard registration
$75: Employees of Virginia DBHDS or a Community Services Board (CSB)
