Evaluating People Charged with Sexual Offenses

February 8-9, 2024

Live online (virtual)

This two-day, live online (virtual) workshop provides the foundation necessary for mental health professionals to conduct pre-sentencing evaluation of sexual offenders. First, Brock Maust, Esq. (Office of the Attorney General) will present the legal foundations for pre-sentencing evaluations of defendants convicted of a sexual offense, as well as Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) evaluations. Then, a team of psychologists will address the clinical and risk assessment issues relevant to evaluations addressing sexual offending.  Topics include:

  • Paraphilias

  • Research and science underlying risk assessment for sexual offenses

  • Practical, detailed guidance for clinical and risk assessment

  • The Static-99R instrument for assessment of sexual recidivism risk

  • Victim grooming behaviors

  • Online behaviors and offending

Click to download (PDF) a full list of learning objectives.

This workshop is designed to provide the “specialized training” required to be appointed as an expert under Virginia §19.2-300, providing a pre-sentencing evaluation of a “person convicted of an offense indicating sexual abnormality.” Of course, the clinical and risk assessment content of the training apply to pre-sentencing evaluations addressing sexual offenses in any jurisdiction.

This introductory program is well-suited for forensic clinicians without prior training in assessment of sexual offending. Please contact us for detailed information about the days’ schedule.

Training Fees

  • $395: Standard registration

  • $195: Employees of Virginia DBHDS or a Community Services Board (CSB)
