Conducting Ethical Forensic Mental Health Evaluations Via Telepractice

Many evaluators have greater choice in determining whether and how to employ technology in forensic evaluations. This workshop will cover the research supporting the use of remote evaluation practices. Additionally, we will address issues of ethics and risk management and how to write transparently about remote methods. We will discuss the use and interpretation of remote psychological testing. The presentation will cover the AP-LS (APA Div 41) Recommendations for the use of telepsychology in practice and research. Participants can earn up to 5 APA-approved CEUs.

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:

2. Advance equity by increasing access to forensic mental services for all people

3. Apply ethical principles to manage risk and promote quality remote forensic practice

4. Consider how to communicate about remote methods in your report and in testimony

5. Describe principles for effectively employing psychological testing in telepractice

Instructors

Michelle Guyton, PhD, ABPP, is a licensed psychologist and certified forensic evaluator in Oregon at Northwest Forensic Institute, LLC. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology at Sam Houston State University and her doctorate at the University of Utah. She came to Oregon in 2005 where she completed residency training at the Oregon Department of Corrections.  Dr. Guyton worked at the School of Graduate Psychology at Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon for ten years. There she functioned as an assistant then tenured associate professor, director of the forensic track, and in other administrative capacities. She and her students have presented empirical projects at a variety of national and international conferences focused on forensic and correctional psychology. She has published in the area of violence risk assessment, forensic assessment instruments, and telepsychology. Dr. Guyton is the director of the Oregon Forensic Evaluator Training Program, a state-contracted program that provides initial and recertification trainings for evaluators providing competency and criminal responsibility evaluations. She is the training director for NWFI’s postdoctoral fellowship and practicum student programs. Dr. Guyton is Secretary of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology. She is also active in legislative committees and workgroups focused on state forensic mental health. Her clinical practice focuses on both criminal and civil matters. When not in jail, she can be found walking her dogs or watching youth baseball.

Alexander Millkey, PsyD, co-owns Northwest Forensic Institute, LLC. Dr. Millkey is a licensed psychologist and certified forensic evaluator in Oregon. After graduating from Pacific University’s School of Professional Psychology, Dr. Millkey completed his internship at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin before completing his postdoctoral residency at the Oregon Department of Corrections. In the Oregon Department of Corrections, he coordinated mental health assessment in the male intake facility at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. After he left the Oregon Department of Corrections he took a position as a consulting forensic psychologist at the Oregon State Hospital, where he conducted risk assessments and helped develop and implement the institution’s risk management architecture. Dr. Millkey continued to conduct evaluations for the courts through the Oregon State Hospital’s Forensic Evaluation Service, in a limited capacity, until January 2023. Dr. Millkey has presented at national and international conferences on a number of topics including assessing fitness to proceed, assessment of malingering, forensic evaluation, assessment of defendants with intellectual disabilities, risk assessment, and forensic assessment of examinees with unusual clinical presentations. Dr. Millkey is faculty for the Oregon Forensic Evaluation Training Program, where he conducts trainings on report writing, assessment of response style, expert testimony, evaluation of mental state at the time of the offense, and the use of videoconferencing technology in conducting forensic evaluations. Dr. Millkey served on the Peer Review Panel for the Oregon Forensic Evaluator Certification Program, where he evaluated and provided feedback on the work samples of certified forensic evaluators. Dr. Millkey has conducted trainings for the Psychiatric Security Review Board on the use of short- to mid-term risk assessment instruments. In the criminal forensic domain Dr. Millkey conducts a variety of evaluations including fitness to proceed, criminal responsibility, mental state at the time of the incident, and violence risk assessment.

Continuing Education

Participants can expect to receive up to 5 hours of continuing education credits (CEUs) approved by the American Psychological Association (APA). ILPPP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ILPPP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

You must join by 10:15 am and stay for the duration of the presentation in order to receive the CE credits.

CE credits are applicable for licensed psychologists; other disciplines will need to check the relevant statutes and guidance regarding whether or not this can count towards any CE requirement.

• $195: Standard registration

• $95: Employees of Virginia DBHDS or a Community Services Board (CSB)

Please note that the reduced rate is available only for DBHDS and CSB employees, rather than all state employees, because DBHDS partially sponsors this training program.

Occasionally large facilities or state agencies outside Virginia want to send a team of trainees, for whom we can arrange a discounted group rate. Please contact us to discuss such arrangements.

Cancellation Policy

You may cancel your registration up to 7 days before the event starts. Your confirmation email will have information on how to cancel. All refunds will be assessed by Eventbrite's service fee. This fee is 6.6% of the registration price + $1.79. This fee will be assessed regardless of when the cancellation occurs in relation to the date of the training.
